Published in 2007
This report lays out 39 GMO contamination cases in 23 countries which happened in 2006 – 2007. In most of the cases the contaminated crops were: soya, cotton, rape, papaya and fish. In the last 10 years, through the annual GMO Register Report over 216 GMO contamination cases were registered in 57 countries.
The GMO contamination or illegal growing incidents happening in 2007 refer to: cotton (1 incident), fish (4 incidents), maize (9 incidents), rape oil (2 incidents), papaya (1 incident), rise (20 incidents) and soya (2 incidents). Hazards posed by GM soybeans
Report made by: Greenpeace - Romania
Author: Gabriel Paun
Bucharest, october, 2006
The use of Roundup-Ready genetically modified (GM) soya (Line 40-2-3) has been authorized since 1996 for food production in the UE and other states (United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Japan). Each authorization was preceded by an assessment accomplished by the competent authority regarding the safety of the human health and the environment. In Romania, GM soy has been cultivated since 1997 in the absence of a restrictive legislation, proper control resources, and most of all in the absence of a credible risk assessment regarding the environment and human health.
This report presents the conclusions of the initial risk assessment and recent discoveries which raise doubts regarding the safety of these GM soy plants. Many politicians, like David Byrne, the ex EU Health Commissioner, feel that the less GM food is examined the more safe it is. Download

Evidence regarding contamination and illegal cultivation of GM soy in Romania
Report made by: Greenpeace - Romania
Author: Gabriel Paun
Bucharest, october, 2006
With only 15 months before adhering to the European Union, Romania is still divided between two positions regarding GMO, the approving position adopted by the United States, and the cautious position taken by the European Union. In the past, Romania proved to be leaning towards the cultivation of GM plants, not benig synchronized with the attitude adopted by most of the European countries.
According to official data, Romania has the largest area under GM cultivation in Europe. But these figures don't present all data. Although the involved authorities strongly argue that in Romania, GM cultivation unfolds under strict control, citing statistic data and rules regarding the seeds, investigations accomplished by Greenpeace, and another institution, clearly show that Romania is practically invaded by these GM plants. GM plant control in Europe
Report made by: Inf'OGM Veille Citoyenne
Author: Eric MENUIER, Biologist
Paris, october, 2006
In the GM plants' domain, European legislation is very clear about one thing: every product, consumable or not, which contains a transgenic event, must be traceable and labeled in every stage.
This assumes, that in every moment the national authorities could have human, financial and most of all technical resources to control the labeling and the contents of these products.
However, the recent contamination cases where products contain GM rise from the United States (LL601 and LL62) and China (Bt63) put in doubt the efficiency of the practiced system. This calls for an apparently simple procedure but with complicated application methodologies. Download

Influential methods in GMO debates
Report made by: Inf'OGM Veille Citoyenne
Author: Thierry RAFFIN, Sociologist, Administrator of Inf'OGM
Paris, June, 2003
The C4iFR cabinet (France) announces the publication of a paid study, interesting especially due to the way that biotechnology firms use the Perception Management techniques through a website to manipulate public opinion in the GMO issue as a "neutral" information. The GMO "debate" case is approached by this research cabinet as an emblematic one in the way that firms use these new electronic information channel perspectives to incorporate aggressive influential strategies in the communication polithics. Inf'OGM obtained the approval of the C4iFR cabinet to publish this synthesis. This will let citizens to form an opinion by presenting a number of facts that determine people rather to ask questions then to anchor themselves to a soothing presentation. Download

GMO - is hunger a thing of the past?
Report made by: Inf'OGM Veille Citoyenne
Author: Thierry RAFFIN, Sociologist
Paris, June, 2003
Could GMO be a solution to the world hunger issue? This is one of the arguments biotechnology companies bring in their GMO promotion campaigns. And if they do it so strongly and so constant, must we believe that this argument has a real base or are there other motives that come from the bad conscience of rich countries regarding the "developing" ones?
This document proposes to make a critical synthesis about the bond that some actors and organisms tend to establish between GMOs and fighting hunger. We can show that different parts of the problem (new generation GMO announcements, crop product improvements, traditional variety certification) have also positive and negative aspects for developing countries. UE Extension: An opportunity for new GMO introduction?
Report made by: ANPED (Norther Alliance for Sustainability) & Friends of the Earth Europe
Author: Thomas Schweiger
Co-Authors: Iza Kruszewska, Geert Ritsema and Marjana Dermelj
May, 2003
This report presents the potential hazards associated with the adhering of new states to the European Union, regarding the growing of GMOs. It presents the problematic situation in which many states can find themselves, Romania being considered the country with the least control regarding GMO cultivation. The legal implications which are related to the agricultural and food politics and GMOs are widely presented as well as the problems of the adhering states regarding the harmonization of the regulations and their implementation to meet the bio security standards of the EU. Also, the report brings a series of recommendations as for the EU like for the adhering countries. Download

Report: Romania invaded by genetically modified organisms
Report made by: ANPED (Northern Alliance for Sustainability) & Friends of the Earth Europe
Author: Iza Kruszerwska
March, 2003
The documentation for this report took place in February 2003, through direct interviews and over the phone - benefiting from the help of governmental experts, institutions, farmers, and NGOs.
The purpose of this report is to: a) Analyze the legal, administrative, scientific and political situation of the genetic engineering in the agriculture and food sector of Romania. b) To warn Romania's population and especially the agricultural, consumer and religious social categories about the danger represented by GM varieties, including the potential impact of these over the environment, health and Romania's penetration into the European markets. c) To rush the implementation of the Aarhus Convention which Romania approved. d) To offer a durable alternative to GMO based agriculture, like organic agriculture. e) To bring to the attention of Romanian dignitaries the implications of growing and importing GMOs (seeds, varieties and feed) unauthorized by the EU, which they would have over the adhering of Romania to the EU.
