Dear Romanian authorities,
I wish to express my concerned regarding the negative impact and risks posed by the cultivation of the MON810 genetically modified corn resistant to Ostrinia nubilialis (Corn-borer), because of:
- the environmental risks on: soil, vised and not-vised insects, spontaneous flora, biodiversity;
- risks on human and animal health;
- the obvious contamination risk through genetic impurification of the conventional, organic and traditional corn crops;
- the fact that there are no independent studies on the environmental impact in Romania;
The Romanian regulation in place doesn’t contribute to the removal of any of these exposed risks nor does it prevent their consequences.
Based on new scientific evidence which attests the negative effects of genetically modified organisms on human and animal health and the environment, countries like: France, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland have already banned the cultivation of the MON810 corn. Similar steps are being undertaken by the following EU member states: Greece, Poland and Italy.
The Romanian Government must rely on the precautionary principle by enabling the safeguard clause regulated through the 19/2001 EU Directive in order to protect the consumers and the environment.
Therefore, the petitioner of this letter urges the Romanian Government to follow the example of the European states, putting the interest of the consumers, farmers and the environment above the interests of GMO producing companies, and to prohibit the release into the environment for the purpose of commercial cultivation of the MON810 genetically modified maize, by establishing a de facto moratorium for a period of 5 years, in Romania.
