The Hungarian government launched a lawsuit at the European Court of Justice because the European Commission has recently approved the cultivation of a genetically modified potato named Amflora announced Gogos Zoltan, Secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture. The cabinet decided on the action today, which is directed against the European Commission. The action – said Zoltan Gogos – has to be submitted until the 31st of May. In the trial we want to prove that the committee has made the wrong decision beacause an assessement on the health risks of GM potatoes were not carried out – he added.
The government is now preparing a safeguard clause procedure to ensure that the GM potato cultivation ban (moratorium) enters into force. Fidesz also said that after the election it intends to ask the proceedings at the European Commission. Industry experts however say, that the acceptance of the safeguard clause by EU may be in doubt, as Hungary could not back it up with scientific evidence in such a short time why it is dangerous to cultivate GM potatoes.
