Decisions on new genetically modified organisms in Romania
22/04/2010
Press release - InfOMG
Dear members of the press,
Today, 22 of April 2010, the Romanian Biosafety Commission meets to evaluate new genetically modified organisms (GMO).
The meeting will take place starting with 09:30 at the National Environmental Protection Agency (Splaiul Independentei, nr. 294, sector 6, Bucharest, Romania). The Biosafety Commission is a scientific body, with a consultative role in evaluating GMO notifications.
The members of the Commission (http://www.anpm.ro/Files/Ordin%20CSB_2008563253324.pdf) will evaluate 7 GMO notifications which request authorization for deliberate release into the environment for testing purpose. The notifications http://www.anpm.ro/content.aspx?id=140 belong to the companies:
- Monsanto (3 notifications for the genetically modified maize varieties MON89034xMON88017, MON89034xNK603 si NK603),
- Pioneer (3 notifications for the genetically modified maize varieties NK603xMON810, 1507xNK603 si NK603),
- Limagrain (genetically modified maize variety tolerant to glyphosate).
These maize varieties develop their own insecticide and tolerate very toxic herbicides based on glyphosate.
We wish to draw your attention to very important issues:
- The field trials proposed by the companies are extremely large, several reaching up to 10 000 m2/ field trial.
- Some of the notifications include controversial maize varieties such as MON810 si NK603 which affect mammals health (damages to kidneys, liver, heart, adrenal glands, spleen and haematopoietic system) http://www.biolsci.org/v05p0706.htm
- According to the Operating Rules of the Romanian Biosafety Commission, the meeting is confidential. The GMO Information Centre repeatedly draw public attention on the deficiency and the lack of transparency of the Commission, authorized even by the Rules (ex. art. no. 16) http://www.anpm.ro/afisareact.aspx?id_act=538
- Romania cultivates an average of 2,5 millions hectares / year of non-GM maize, which is exposed to genetic contamination.
- GMO producing companies have a very aggressive policy aiming a monopole on food production. Recent political declarations from Romania which favour GMOs show the influence of these companies in Romania (http://www.infomg.ro/web/ro/Home/Stiri/3/765).
You are welcomed to interview the members of the Commission to find out about their conclusions from the meeting.
Hoping that these informations are of interest for you,
Sincerely yours,
The GMO Information Centre
