China says 'no' to genetically engineered rice
31/01/2012
It took seven years, teams of young campaigners and hordes of devoted supporters, but September 2011 the Chinese government finally said it was suspending the commercialisation of genetically-engineered (GE) rice. The origins of rice cultivation can be traced to the valleys of China's Yangtze River, with some estimates putting it at over 7,000 years ago. In that time, rice has become an integral part of Chinese life and culture. It dictates the lives of millions of farmers in the Chinese countryside, feeds over a billion Chinese citizens each year and is synonymous with Chinese cuisine and culture.
12 Reasons To Avoid GMOs
I love talking to people about food. And these days at my restaurant, I inevitably end up talking about GMOs. Often, people ask me the reasons why I do not allow any GMO foods at GustOrganics. In fact, this happens so often that I started creating a list in my head of all the reasons I choose not to offer them to my customers. The list started to get so big that I decided to write it down and I thought I'd share it with you, dear readers.
EU Commission plans new Regulation for risk assessment of genetically engineered plants
The European Commission has presented a new draft Regulation for the risk assessment of food and feed. For the first time, it would mean that the European Food Safety Authority EFSA would have to work to legally binding standards. However, as a first Testbiotech analysis shows, the proposed standards are not sufficient to exclude risks for human health and the environment.
UK needs scientific research into agroecology not GM
The greatest challenge facing agricultural scientists is how to work with farmers producing more ecological and healthier food - not GM, argues Patrick Mulvany, chair of the UK Food Group and advisor to Practical Action. At the start of 2012 we should be energised by the news that BASF, the German chemical and seeds giant, has decided to pull out of genetically modified plant development in Europe. This is testament to the effectiveness of public pressure and 'another nail in the coffin for genetically modified foods in Europe,' as Adrian Bebb of Friends of the Earth said.
Monsanto says won't sell GMO maize in France in 2012
U.S. biotech firm Monsanto said on Tuesday it does not plan to sell its genetically modified maize MON810 in France this year, nor after, even though the country's highest court overturned a 3-year ban in November. "Monsanto considers that favorable conditions for the sale of the MON810 in France in 2012 and beyond are not in place," the company said in a statement, adding that it had told the French authorities about its intentions.
USDA Greenlights Monsanto's Utterly Useless New GMO Corn
The drought-tolerant corn decision, which came down on Dec. 21, was momentous occasion, because it marked the first deregulation of a GMO crop with a "complex" trait. What I mean by that is, the other GMOs on the market have simple, one-gene traits: a gene that confers resistance to a particular herbicide, like Monsanto's Roundup Ready seed or a gene that expresses the toxic-to-bugs properties of the bacteria Bt, as in Monsanto's Bt seed. But a plant's use of water is a complex process involving several genes; there's no single "drought tolerant" gene. Generating such traits in plants that succeed in field conditions has been considerably more tricky for the agrichemical giants than than simple traits.
South Africa Exporting Corn Risks Depleting Domestic Supplies: Commodities
A government-backed plan to export a record corn surplus may leave South African silos drained of the country’s staple food by the end of April. The price of white corn, used to make the corn meal eaten by many South Africans, has risen to a record in Johannesburg and the nation is importing the yellow variety of the grain for the first time in two years. Millers, chicken producers and cattle breeders are facing a surge in costs and food inflation may quicken to as much as 15 percent from 11.1 percent in November, said Gina Schoeman, an economist at Absa Group Ltd.
BASF moves GM division out of Europe
BASF, the German chemical giant, is to pull out of genetically modified plant development in Europe and relocate it to the US, where political and consumer resistance to GM crops is not so entrenched. The headquarters of BASF Plant Science will move from Limburgerhof in south-west Germany to Raleigh, North Carolina, and two smaller sites in Germany and Sweden will close. The company will transfer some GM crop development to the US but stop work on crops targeted at the European market – four varieties of potato and one of wheat.
France upholds ban on Monsanto GM maize
The French government said on Friday it would uphold its ban on a strain of genetically modified maize developed by U.S. biotech firm Monsanto in 2012, even though France's highest court overturned the moratorium last year. The ecology and agriculture ministers said in a statement they would maintain the ban on MON810, an insect-resistant strain of maize which is sold in several European countries, after meeting with farming groups.
Beekeepers occupy Monsanto France
Starting from a standing meeting Léojac they signed yesterday a coup by penetrating so cunning in the administrative buildings of the Monsanto-Monbéqui installed near the Garonne. An advance guard of about twenty of them acted as the Trojan horse posing as deliverymen and then opening the gates to the main body. The surprise was total. When the police arrived the occupants were on the premises with hives, smoker and realise what a picnic invigorating.
Latvia on the brink of complete ban of GMO products
More than 100 of the 110 municipalities (novads) of Latvia have decided that their land will be GMO-free by the end of 2012. Cultivation of GM crops will be prohibited on municipal land, according to Eric Leitis, senior consultant of the protection of species and habitats at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia.
270,000 Organic Farmers Sue Monsanto
The eighty-three family farmers, small and family owned seed businesses, and agricultural organizations comprising the organic plaintiff group represent over 300,000 individuals. The landmark lawsuit, filed in March 2011, challenges the validity of Monsanto’s transgenic/GMO patents and seeks court protection for innocent family farmers who may become contaminated by Monsanto seed.
GM crops: A new way forward
Just two genetically-modified crops have ever been approved for cultivation in Europe. In comparison, the USA has 90 approved GM crops. At the heart of those striking differences lies European politics. For a GM crop to be grown in Europe, a qualified majority of the 27 member states has to approve its use, following a positive European Food Standards Authority assessment that the risk to human health or the environment is acceptable.
Leading scientist says agroecology is the only way to feed the world
Hans Herren, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized scientist specializing in sustainable agriculture. He is president of the Millennium Institute, a non-profit development research and service organization dedicated to sustainable development. Dr. Herren co-chaired the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science & Technology (IAASTD), an initiative sponsored by the World Bank and United Nations in partnership with the World Health Organization that assessed global agriculture and recommended agroecological solutions to world hunger.
Monsanto Corn Unlikely To Help Drought-Stricken Farmers
Yesterday, the Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it would allow unlimited planting of a genetically modified variety of corn designed by Monsanto Co. to be resistant to certain kinds of droughts. The company and the USDA have both admitted the crop will fare only modestly better than current conventional varieties under low- and moderate-level drought conditions. This means that this corn will be useful only for a fraction of corn acres – just 15 percent by USDA estimates.
The Council does not reach an agreement on three genetically modified varieties
The Agriculture Ministers did not reach an agreement on proposals for decisions authorising the use of three genetically modified varieties in food, feed and for other uses, neither in favour nor against. In addition, Ministers had an exchange of views on the CAP reform proposal for a regulation on rural development.
Unlabeled Animal Feed with Genetically Modified Ingredients on Sale in Bulgaria
Genetically modified animal feed without GMO labeling is being sold on the Bulgarian market, according to reports of the Public Environmental Center for Sustainable Development/ PECSD/ in Varna and environmental NGO 'Za Zemiata' (For the Earth). A team of experts conducted the testing in November with the financial assistance of the European Union.
Peru approves law banning GM production for 10 years
Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and Congress have heard the cries of Peruvian farmers and have banned GMOs for ten years. The effects of GM foods on people who consume them and on their crops have generated enormous controversy. In this light Peru has taken an important step to protect their local food producers, establishing a moratorium on income and production of genetically modified organisms.
Scrutinizing the current practice of the environmental risk assessment of GM maize applications for cultivation in the EU
The prevailing controversies on the potential environmental risks of genetically modified organisms [GMOs] still fuel ongoing discussions among European Union [EU] member states, risk assessors, applicants and scientists, even several years after the commercial introduction of GMOs. The disagreements mainly derive from the current risk assessment practice of GMOs and differences in the perceived environmental risks. Against this background, the aim of this study was to scrutinize the current practice of environmental risk assessment [ERA] of several GMO applications currently pending for authorisation in the EU.
Britain spends £10m to stop deforestation in Brazil
The money was announced by Caroline Spelman, the Environment Secretary, at the latest UN climate summit in Durban South Africa. She said the money will stop illegal logging in the Cerrado, scrub forest in central Brazil that is rapidly being cleared to make way for food crops for the rich world. It is part of a £2.9 billion climate change fund put aside by the UK Government to help poor countries adapt to global warming and cut carbon emissions up to 2015.
Damage to Monsanto corn found in more states
Federal monitors said this week they have found more evidence that Monsanto's genetically engineered corn is failing to kill the insects it is designed to repel. The US Environmental Protection Agency posted a report this week saying that corn rootworm -- a major agricultural pest -- is damaging Monsanto's corn.
Africa needs non-GM green revolution to boost food
MILAN (Reuters) - Africa will rely on non-transgenic crop breeding to boost food output to feed its rapidly growing population in the coming decades but will also need genetically modified products (GM), the head of a pan-African farm think tank said on Wednesday. The world needs to boost cereals output by 1 billion tonnes and produce 200 million extra tonnes of livestock products a year by 2050 to feed a population projected to rise to 9 billion from about 7 billion now, the United Nations estimates.
Bayer CropScience targets non-GMO wheat traits
Bayer's CropScience unit plans to develop new heat- and drought-resistant wheat traits over the next decade without the use of genetic modification, a top executive said on Tuesday. But Europe, the world's top wheat producer, must overcome its fear of agricultural innovation such as genetically modified (GM) crops or risk undermining its own food security, the division's chief executive officer, Sandra Peterson, told Reuters in an interview.
French GMO crops unlikely in 2012 despite end of ban
Genetically modified maize is unlikely to make it into French fields next year despite the lifting this week of a ban on a U.S. strain, as evidence rises that France will launch new restrictions, observers said on Tuesday. French president Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday the government was preparing a "new safety clause" to forbid sowing of MON810 produced by U.S. giant Monsanto, after France's highest court on Monday overturned the country's ban on the only GMO maize authorised for cultivation in the EU.
French court annuls ban on growing Monsanto GMO maize
France's highest court on Monday overturned France's ban on growing a strain of genetically modified maize (corn) developed by U.S. biotech firm Monsanto, saying it was not sufficiently justified. The decision follows a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in early September saying France had based its decision to impose a moratorium on the growing of Monsanto's insect-resistant MON810 maize on the wrong EU legislation.
Biotech opponents could receive millions
A group of biotechnology opponents has been awarded $1.6 million for winning a court battle over USDA's commercialization of genetically engineered alfalfa. A federal judge has found Geertson Seed Farms and other opponents of the crop are entitled to recover attorney fees and other costs from the federal government. The award is primarily based on years of legal work conducted by the Center for Food Safety, a nonprofit that has opposed several biotech crops.
Monsanto, Bayer and Dow face trial for 'systematic human rights abuses'
Permanent Peoples' Tribunal accuses biotech giants Monsanto, Dow, Bayer, Syngenta, DuPont and BASF of promoting dangerous pesticides including endosulfan, paraquat and neonicotinoid. The world's major agrochemical companies, Monsanto, Dow, Bayer, Syngenta, DuPont and BASF, will face a public tribunal in early December accused of systematic human rights violations.
No decision on two GM soybean products
Two proposals to authorise genetically modified (GM) soybean products were not endorsed, on 14 November, by member states during a meeting of the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCoFCAH). They will now be examined by the appeal committee.
EU imposes stiff controls to block Chinese GM rice
BRUSSELS - EU member states have slapped rigid new controls on all imports of Chinese rice products in the wake of ever-increasing detection of products 'contaminated' with unauthorised genetically modified rice. Following a near unanimous decision by experts sitting on the bloc’s food safety committee, Europe will now require 100 percent of all consignments of rice originating in China to be certified as meeting EU standards.
Pests continue to bug Bt cotton growers
Pests continue to cause problems to growers despite the widespread and increasing use of genetically modified cotton in the country. According to Dr C.D. Mayee, President of Indian Society for Cotton Improvement, farmers are not any more facing problems from the bollworm that led to the introduction of Bt cotton in the country. This year, Bt cotton has been cultivated in 93 per cent of the total 118 lakh hectares of land under cotton.
US asks Turkey to change GMO regulation
US authorities have asked Turkey to be more tolerant with its legislation on GMO, a Turkish daily reports. Meanwhile, the Turkish Agriculture Minister denies the claims. U.S. officials have asked for changes to be made to Turkey’s regulation on genetically modified organisms (GMO) exports to Turkish markets, daily Radikal reported yesterday.
No golden opportunity in Golden Rice
The Philippines poorest member of the parliament and a farmer himself-- Anakpawis Partylist Rep. Rafael V. Mariano opined the promotion and development of Golden Rice in this a country of 7,100 islands will only strengthen the widespread control of transnational corporations (TNCs) in agriculture and food by patenting seeds and varieties of rice.
Study shows non-Bt acres gain most from use of GMO seed
When Paul Mitchell, Bill Hutchison and their research partners released a study on the benefits of Bt corn last year, the results raised eyebrows because it pointed toward a win-win situation for farmers. While past studies had looked at the economic benefits of growing certain transgenic crops, there had long been criticism from farmers who raised non-transgenic crops about issues, such as pollen drift, causing a reduction in the economic value of their crops.
Cargill and BASF Plant Science join forces to develop EPA/DHA canola oil
Cargill and BASF Plant Science today announced an agreement to co-develop a new dietary source of EPA/DHA that will make it easier for consumers globally to achieve optimal intakes of EPA- and DHA-rich omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. This next generation canola oil containing EPA/DHA will enable food, pharmaceutical and nutritional supplement manufacturers to deliver the potential health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in a wide variety of new, cost-effective consumer products available by the end of the decade.
Why Is the State Department Using Our Money to Pimp for Monsanto?
People in India are up in arms about eggplant. Not just any eggplant -- the fight, which is also raging in the Philippines, is over Monsanto's Bt eggplant. Even as increasing scientific evidence concludes that biotechnology and its arsenal of genetically modified crops may be doing more harm than good, companies like Monsanto are still pushing them hard and they are getting help from the U.S.
Gates Foundation “Swimming Against a Tide of Informed Opinion”
As the world population reaches 7 billion GM Freeze says in a new report that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s policy on agricultural development to tackle hunger is “swimming against a tide of informed opinion”. The report reveals the Gates Foundation has allocated over 40% of its committed research expenditure from 2005 to 2011 on projects involving risky “silver bullet” GM technology.
In 16 years, farm suicides cross a quarter million
It's official. The country has seen over a quarter of a million farmers’ suicides between 1995 and 2010. The National Crime Records Bureau’s latest report on ‘Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India’ places the number for 2010 at 15,964. That brings the cumulative 16-year total from 1995 — when the NCRB started recording farm suicide data — to 2,56,913, the worst-ever recorded wave of suicides of this kind in human history.
Argentinian report identifies major medical problems associated with RR soy
An important report by Argentine physicians has just been published in English. It arose from the 1st National Meeting Of Physicians In The Crop-Sprayed Towns at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the National University of Cordoba. It points yet again to a big rise in birth defects up in parallel with expansion of GM Roundup Ready soy and also conatins a lot of detail about DNA damage, confirming laboratory research on glyphosate and its breakdown product AMPA - and neurological development problems.
Party submits petition to ban GMO
BELGRADE -- The Greens of Serbia representatives submitted a petition to the Serbian parliament, requesting ban of genetically modified food. They also submitted a draft law banning genetically modified organisms (GMO). “With the petition, which was signed by more than 35,000 citizens, the Greens of Serbia request that the state support the ban of production, import, use and sale of GMO,” Greens of Serbia leader Ivan Karić told reporters.
Push for GMO Labeling on Food
California voters may soon enact nation’s first GMO label requirement. For better or worse, we’ve been eating the fruits of bioengineering for decades. While some consumers remain skeptical of the long-range health impact of this relatively recent technology, bioengineered products can be difficult to avoid, as the federal government doesn’t require that packages identify these gene-altered foods. But one state may soon make a demand where the feds fall short: its own label requirement for lab-created ingredients.
GM crops promote superweeds, food insecurity and pesticides, say NGOs
Report finds genetically modified crops fail to increase yields let alone solve hunger, soil erosion and chemical-use issues. Genetic engineering has failed to increase the yield of any food crop but has vastly increased the use of chemicals and the growth of "superweeds", according to a report by 20 Indian, south-east Asian, African and Latin American food and conservation groups representing millions of people.
Hungary has joined the Alps-Adriatic GMO-free Region
Parliament has passed a resolution requesting that local governments ban the use of genetically modified organisms in agriculture and farming within their areas of administration, so joining a Croatian initiative. Parliament unanimously passed the proposal put forward by the Committee on Sustainable Development, with 346 votes. The adoption of the proposal means that Hungary has joined the Croatian initiative, put forward as part of the Alps-Adriatic cooperation, that bans the use of "polluted" crops and is aimed at keeping the region free of GMOs.
GM cotton genes found in wild species
[SANTIAGO, CHILE] Genetically modified (GM) cotton genes have been found in wild populations for the first time, making it the third plant species — after Brassica and bentgrass — in which transgenes have established in the wild. The discovery was made in Mexico by six Mexican researchers investigating the flow of genes to wild cotton populations of the species Gossypium hirsutum.
What Are GMOs & How Many US Foods Contain Them? (Infographic)
In light of it being GMO Awareness Month this October, and that TreeHugger has written extensively on the subject but never done a really succinct piece on what a genetically modified organism is, I'm passing on this infographic from Nature's Path Organic Foods. It does a good job of explaining what a GMO is, and the current situation in regards to requiring labeling on them in food in various places around the world.
Biotech seeds are no fix for African hunger, philanthropist Buffett tells Food Prize audience
The genetically engineered seeds and high-tech farming methods that the United States is pushing poor countries to accept are no solution to hunger by themselves and may actually wind up harming small-scale farmers, philanthropist Howard G. Buffett said. Buffett, son of billionaire Warren Buffett, has worked with Microsoft founder Bill Gates to fund the development of biotech seeds that could be used in Africa, including drought-tolerant corn.
The U.S. Now Uses More Corn for Fuel Than Feed!
The corn ethanol supporters are probably not very familiar with the concept of opportunity cost. Either that, or the subsidies and high corn prices are just to juicy to give up. Only about 20% of all the corn grown in the U.S. now goes to feed humans directly, and more than half of what remains is now being turned into ethanol fuel while the other half goes to feed livestock. The problem is that life-cycle studies show that corn ethanol ranges from barely better than fossil-fuel gasoline to significantly worse, especially if you take into account land use issues and the impact of higher food prices on the poor. Many would agree that corn ethanol is a net loss for society, yet this industry keeps growing.
GMO cultivation drops in EU, except in Spain and Portugal
In the European Union, only eight countries (out of 27) commercially grow GMOs. Cultivations, however, decreased steadily since 2009, except in Spain and Portugal this year, where there is a slight increase. A brief overview of the different official data is collected below. In Spain and Portugal, plantings of genetically modified Bt maize has increased slightly between 2010 and 2011. These two countries grow over 90% of transgenic crops in the European Union.
EU to serve genetically engineered animals for dinner?
he European Food Safety Authority, EFSA, is for the first time preparing for the authorisation of food derived from genetically engineered animals. After a period of consultation, today is the last day for comments on a first draft of the new EFSA Guidance that will be used to perform risk assessment on relevant products. According to this draft Guidance, EFSA plans to assess the risks of products such as milk, meat, eggs in a way very similar to that used for genetically engineered plants.
EU bans GM-contaminated honey from general sale
Bavarian beekeepers forced to declare their honey as genetically modified because of contamination from nearby Monsanto crops. The European Union's highest court on Tuesday ruled that honey which contains trace amounts of pollen from genetically modified (GM) corn must be labelled as GM produce and undergo full safety authorisation before it can be sold as food.
GM protest in Warsaw
A demonstration calling for President Komorowski not to sign off on a new law allowing GM seeds to be used in Poland took place in Warsaw over the weekend. On 31 July 2011 the Senate, the upper house of parliament, voted to pass into law the 'Seeds Act', which legalises the planting of GM seeds in Poland.
GM corn being developed for fuel instead of food
US farmers are growing the first corn plants genetically modified for the specific purpose of putting more ethanol in gas tanks rather than producing more food. Aid organisations warn the new GM corn could worsen a global food crisis exposed by the famine in Somalia by diverting more corn into energy production.
Unintended components in genetically engineered soy
The European Food Safety Authority EFSA has recently published new favorable opinions on two genetically engineered soy. In their dossiers EFSA for the first time confirms unintended changes in the composition of the components of genetically engineered plants. The invasive methods used in genetic engineering cause disturbances in plant metabolism in regard to content of fatty acids, amino acids (Dupont/Pioneer, soy 356043) and vitamin E (Monsanto, soy MON87701).
Roundup herbicide research shows plant, soil problems
The heavy use of Monsanto's Roundup herbicide appears to be causing harmful changes in soil and potentially hindering yields of the genetically modified crops that farmers are cultivating, a government scientist said on Friday. Repeated use of the chemical glyphosate, the key ingredient in Roundup herbicide, impacts the root structure of plants, and 15 years of research indicates that the chemical could be causing fungal root disease, said Bob Kremer, a microbiologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service.
Monsanto's superweeds & superbugs
The ecological, economic and agronomic disaster accompanying herbicide-tolerant transgenic crops is by now well known: over 10 million acres of superweeds resistant to Monsanto’s weedkiller, RoundUp; farm machinery breaking on RoundUp-resistant pigweed thick as a baseball bat; Monsanto paying farmers to spray their fields with competitors’ herbicides; a new generation of transgenic crops in the pipeline engineered to withstand older even more dangerous chemicals like 2,4-D.
GM SmartStax corn risks exposed
This year, we are eating from the first harvest of Monsanto’s eight-trait “SmartStax” genetically modified (GM) corn. Approved in 2009 and grown for the first time in North America last year, the new GM corn appears as processed food ingredients and feed for dairy and meat animals. Canada’s approval of SmartStax corn exposed just how little Health Canada cares to investigate the potential risks of GM crops and foods – in the case of SmartStax, not at all. Now the process to approve SmartStax in Europe has identified many of the risk issues being ignored on both sides of the ocean. Confidential industry summaries of data as well as critiques by European experts show more studies must be done to determine any potential health and environmental risks.
Scientists from around the world decry proposed human trials of GM wheat
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia's national science agency, is considering extending animal trials of a genetically-modified (GM) wheat crop created with an artificially low glycemic index to humans, despite a lack of proper safety assessments. And a group of scientists and academics from around the world recently sent a joint letter to CSIRO explaining their "unequivocal denunciation" of the irresponsible proposal.
GE contamination – it’s not worth the risk
The growing of genetically engineered (GE) crops is something that Greenpeace has long opposed, due to the risks posed to both human health and the environment, and unwanted contamination of our food due to the difficulties of controlling the spread of these crops. In recent months, news has emerged about how chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer has been forced to make massive payouts after conventional US rice crops were contaminated by Bayer’s experimental GE rice in 2006.
GMO maize damage may total billions, says expert
The damage to Hungary's agriculture caused through sowing genetically modified seeds and to the country's GMO-free status will total billions of forints, an expert told MTI on Wednesday. Ecologist and forensic expert Imre Lanszki insisted that Hungary will not be in a position to reject GMO in the future, and Hungarian seeds will be at a disadvantage, which may compromise the productivity of national farming.
BASF Pulls the Plug on New GM Crop Development in the EU
BASF Plant Sciences have decided not to develop GM crops for the European market. Recent correspondence with the company said they, “[D]ecided some time ago to not initiate any new projects that are focused exclusively on the European market.” GM Freeze says this shows financial decisions are finally catching up with market realities. BASF’s position was sent in an email on 7 July 2011 by a BASF Plant Science Communications Manager.
Wait, Did the USDA Just Deregulate All New Genetically Modified Crops?
It's a hoary bureaucratic trick, making a controversial announcement on the Friday afternoon before a long weekend, when most people are daydreaming about what beer to buy on the way home from work, or are checking movie times online. But that's precisely what the US Department of Agriculture pulled last Friday. In an innocuous-sounding press release titled "USDA Responds to Regulation Requests Regarding Kentucky Bluegrass," agency officials announced their decision not to regulate a "Roundup Ready" strain of Kentucky bluegrass—that is, a strain genetically engineered to withstand glyphosate, Monsanto's widely used herbicide, which we know as Roundup.
GMO maize ploughed under throughout Hungary
Some 400 hectares of maize have been destroyed throughout Hungary after the crops were found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds, the deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development in charge of supervision of the food supply chain and agricultural administration told MTI on Friday.
GMOs: Parliament backs national right to cultivation bans
EU Member States should have the flexibility to ban or restrict the cultivation of genetically modified crops and should be able to cite environmental motives for doing so, according to MEPs voting on draft legislation on Tuesday. The draft amendment to existing legislation - adopted with 548 votes in favour, 84 against and 31 abstentions - will now go to the Council for further discussion. Parliament’s rapporteur Corinne Lepage (ALDE, FR) commented: “I am pleased that the Parliament has reached an agreement on the difficult issue of GMOs, which has been an issue of public concern for years.
European Parliament strengthens draft laws to ban GM crops
Brussels, 5 July 2011 – The European Parliament today voted to strengthen a draft EU law giving member states a new right to ban genetically modified (GM) crops from being grown in their territories. Greenpeace welcomes this positive outcome, but warns that national bans are no substitute for thorough safety testing at EU level.
UN calls for transgenic corn ban
Special rapporteur urges country to resume prohibition of genetically-modified version of key crop in both experimental and commercial stages. A United Nations food expert urged the Mexican government to resume a moratorium on genetically-modified varieties of corn. Following a visit to Mexico, Olivier De Schutter, the United Nations special rapporteur on the right to food, on June 21 said the introduction of genetically-modified varieties of the country’s staple crop would threaten Mexico’s crop diversity, which he called “a crucial asset in the face of future threats and unpredictable changes brought about by climate change” and necessary in fighting hunger.
The Human Cost of the War on Superweeds
New report from GM Freeze and Greenpeace International links herbicides to cancer, birth defects and water pollution - From flower boxes in city gardens to intensive farming on a massive scale, weed killers are used under the assumption that they are safe. Roundup, one of the most common herbicides, is marketed by US agrochemical company Monsanto as “safe” for the environment and for humans – deadly for weeds. But are all herbicides really as safe as Monsanto and others are telling us?
Roundup: Birth Defects Caused By World's Top-Selling Weedkiller, Scientists Say
The chemical at the heart of the planet’s most widely used herbicide -- Roundup weedkiller, used in farms and gardens across the U.S. -- is coming under more intense scrutiny following the release of a new report calling for a heightened regulatory response around its use. Critics have argued for decades that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup and other herbicides used around the globe, poses a serious threat to public health. Industry regulators, however, appear to have consistently overlooked their concerns.
EU allows unapproved GM material in feed imports
The European Union adopted new rules on Friday allowing traces of unapproved genetically modified (GM) material in animal feed imports, in a bid to secure grain fodder supplies to the import-dependent bloc. "The regulation ... addresses the current uncertainty EU operators face when placing on the market feed products imported from third countries," the Commission said in a statement.
15 years of GM Soybeans in Argentina
Intoxication, massive clearing, loss of biodiversity, forced evictions, land concentration and murder. The dark sides of 15 years of soy monoculture, a model driven by businesses and governments. The only scientific evidence for the approval of GM soy in Argentina were research data provided by Monsanto. Monsanto produces both soy seed as well as the herbicide Roundup (glyphosate), a product that GM soy has been made resistant to.
GM rice spreads, prompts debate in China
Genetically modified rice has been spreading illegally for years in China, officials have admitted, triggering a debate on a sensitive aspect of the food security plan in the world's most populous nation. Two strains of GM rice were approved for open-field experiments but not commercial sale in 2009. In January, the agriculture ministry said "no genetically modified cereals are being grown in China" outside the test sites.
Argentine lab clones cow to produce human-like milk
An Argentine laboratory announced that it had created the world's first transgenic cow, using human genes that will allow the animal to produce the equivalent of mothers' milk. "The cloned cow, named Rosita ISA, is the first bovine born in the world that incorporates human genes that contain the proteins present in human milk," Argentina's National Institute of Agrobusiness Technology said in a statement on Thursday.
Chinese cows make human breast milk
Chinese scientists have genetically modified dairy cows to produce human breast milk, and hope to be selling it in supermarkets within three years. The milk produced by the transgenic cows is identical to the human variety and has the same immune-boosting and antibacterial qualities as breast milk, scientists at China's Agricultural University in Beijing say.
"Golden Rice," or Trojan Horse?
Farmers, Indigenous people and rural communities around the world celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity last week. But casting a long shadow was the news that big funders and new NGOs are teaming up with the pesticide-biotech giant, Syngenta, in a renewed effort to push genetically engineered rice forward in Bangladesh and the Philippines.
GM food toxins found in the blood of 93% of unborn babies
Toxins implanted into GM food crops to kill pests are reaching the bloodstreams of women and unborn babies, alarming research has revealed. A landmark study found 93 per cent of blood samples taken from pregnant women and 80 per cent from umbilical cords tested positive for traces of the chemicals. Millions of acres in North and South America are planted with GM corn containing the toxins, which is fed in vast quantities to farm livestock around the world – including Britain.
Melons now a Monsanto “invention”
US corporation awarded a European patent on conventionally bred melons. Recent research conducted by the coalition No Patents on Seeds! shows that in May 2011, the US corporation Monsanto was awarded a European patent on conventionally bred melons (EP 1 962 578). Melons have a natural resistance to certain plant viruses. It is especially evident in melons grown in India. Using conventional breeding methods, this type of resistance was introduced to other melons and has now been patented as a Monsanto “invention”.
GM soy: the high cost of the quest for 'green gold'
The green shack where Petrona Villasboa lives in Itapuã is surrounded by shimmering fields. It represents a lucrative golden harvest for some but, for this grieving mother, it has become a symbol of death. The crop that dominates this impoverished area of rural southern Paraguay is genetically modified (GM) soy, and she blames it for her son's death. "Soy destroys people's lives," Petrona says. "It is a poison. It is no way to live."
Drought tolerant GM corn will not feed the world
GeneWatch UK today responded to reports that Monsanto's new drought tolerant genetically modified (GM) corn (maize) does not perform better than conventional varieties (1). The GM industry has made repeated claims that its crops will be needed to feed a growing population as the climate changes, in order to gain public and political support (2).
Peru: Minister of Agriculture steps down in heat of GMO debate

Data from several independent studies “indicate liver and kidney problems as end points of GMO diet effects,” the authors write.
Plant disease raises questions on modified crops
Bouncing down a dirt road a couple of summers ago, past a gentle patchwork of barnyards and soybean fields in central Iowa, farmer Kent Friedrichsen strained over the steering wheel of his van and stared through the windshield in dismay. His soybean fields, where he'd used seeds developed by Monsanto Co. and sprayed with its popular glyphosate weed killer Roundup Ready, were littered with yellowed leaves and dead plants. Four days earlier, the plants had been waist high and emerald green.
Wikileaks – GM Food: Romania Trojan horse for USA in Europe
According to Wikileaks, one of the toughest diplomatic battles fought in Bucharest involved a problem in which the United States and the European Union have very different positions: genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The US tried to use Romania as a wedge to relax the European policies regarding the use of biotechnology in agriculture. Romanian politicians played a duplicitous role.
European Countries May Soon Not Be Able to Ban GMOs

The Battle for Biodiversity: Monsanto and Farmers Clash
Does genetic modification lead to more and better crops? Or will it destroy the foundations of our food systems? Two weeks ago, Monsanto announced the latest genetically engineered crop it hopes to bring to market: a soybean rejiggered to resist the herbicide dicamba. The new product, says Monsanto, will aid in weed control and "deliver peace of mind for growers."
How to Feed the World by 2050: Biotech Isn't the Answer
We don't need to grow more food. Instead, we need to know the world's future population—and what these people will be eating. With food prices hitting record highs, people are rioting and political regimes are crumbling. We can only imagine what it will be like when the global population rises to 9 billion in 2050 from just under 7 billion now. More riots, more deforestation, more hunger, more revolutions? How are these people going to be fed? The unequivocal answer we so often hear: biotechnology.

EU urged to carry out 'complete overhaul' of food agency
Transparency campaigners have called for a "complete overhaul" of the rules governing the European food safety authority (EFSA). The demand follows allegations that four members of EFSA's management board have direct links to the food industry, causing a potential conflict of interest.
EU ministers split on GM crop import approvals
European Union farm ministers failed to reach a decision on Thursday on whether to grant import approval to three genetically modified (GM) crops, which means the final decision now rests with the bloc's executive. The ministers failed to decide whether to approve imports of a herbicide-tolerant GM cotton developed by Germany's Bayer (BAYGn.DE) and a herbicide- and insect-resistant maize developed by U.S. biotech firm Monsanto (MON.N), an EU source said.
EC takes Poland to court for GMO ban
The European Commission has announced it will refer Poland to the Court of Justice for maintaining its ban on GM seeds. "Public morals", "public order" and "cultural policy" are among the options listed in a European Commission working document, seen by this website.
Full economic effects of GM-crops revealed
The costs of segregating genetically modified (GM) and conventional crops are much higher than originally thought, and could push up food prices, warns Friends of the Earth Europe in a new briefing today. ‘The socio-economic effects of GMOs’ reveals the hidden costs of GM crop cultivation that are being unfairly pushed onto conventional and organic sectors – risking further GMO-contamination and increased food prices – and comes as environment ministers meet to discuss GM-crops in Europe.
Save Climate and Double Food Production With Eco-Farming
Eco-farming could double food production in entire regions within 10 years while mitigating climate change, according to a new U.N. report released Tuesday in Geneva. An urgent transformation to ‘eco-farming’ is the only way to end hunger and face the challenges of climate change and rural poverty, said Olivier De Schutter, U.N. Special Rapporteur on the right to food, following the presentation of his annual report focusing on agro-ecology and the right to food to the U.N. Human Rights Council.
The UN Says Hippies Were Right: GMO's Are Out, Eco-Ag Is In
Decades ago, a sizable if motley group of individuals began to reject chemical agriculture arguing that food grown with chemicals was less wholesome, negatively affected the environment and less resilient. Many of these back to-the-land types, long on ideas and short on actual argicultural experience failed in their long-term attempts to implement this counter agricultural movement. However, enough of them stuck around to usher in the modern organic/biodynamic/local food movement.

A discussion on the national television reveals more about GMOs. Guests: professor Badea Marcela – vicepresident of th Biotechnology Commission of the Biology Institute, Bucharest, dr. Rusu Liviu – chief executive of the Food Safety Authority, and from Cluj, Aurel Maxim – member of the Biosecurity Commission and university professor at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca.
No seeds, no independent research
Companies that genetically engineer crops have a lock on what we know about their safety and benefits. Soybeans, corn, cotton and canola — most of the acres planted in these crops in the United States are genetically altered. "Transgenic" seeds can save farmers time and reduce the use of some insecticides, but herbicide use is higher, and respected experts argue that some genetically engineered crops may also pose serious health and environmental risks. Also, the benefits of genetically engineered crops may be overstated.
Greenpeace Hungary demonstrates for GMO ban
Hungarian Greenpeace activists on Thursday added a collection of signatures to a European campaign to collect one million signatures for a petition against easing EU rules on producing genetically modified organisms (GMO). Pending approval from Hungarian parliament in the spring, Hungary is ready to join Croatia, Austria, Slovenia and some north Italian provinces in their efforts to ban GM produce from their lands, he said.
Mexico rejects Monsanto's GMO corn
Mexican officials seem to have more common sense than American officials, with their continued denouncement of Monsanto's genetically-modified (GM) corn. Mexico has kept in effect a moratorium on Monsanto's GM corn since 2005, citing a lack of safety studies and evidence showing the "Frankencorn" is safe, and that it will not cross-contaminate non-GM crops. The Mexican government recently denied Monsanto's request to expand a pilot program for its crops in Northern Mexico as well.
Biotech food? No thanks, we’re European

Genetically Manipulated Crops: The GMO Catastrophe in the USA. A Lesson for the World
18/08/2010
Recently the unelected potentates of the EU Commission in Brussels have sought to override what has repeatedly been shown to be the overwhelming opposition of the European Union population to the spread of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) in EU agriculture. EU Commission President now has a Maltese accountant as health and enviromnent Commissioner to rubber stamp the adoption of GMO. The former EU Environment Commissioner from Greece was a ferocious GMO opponent. As well, the Chinese government has indicated it may approve a variety of GMO rice. Before things get too far along, they would do well to take a closer look at the world GMO test lab, the USA. There GMO crops are anything but beneficial. Just the opposite.

La Via Campesina Call to Action – Help Stop Terminator’s Return!
28/07/2010
Four years after the moratorium on Terminator technology was reaffirmed by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), proposals to develop and commercialize ‘genetic-use restriction technologies’ (GURTs) are back on the agenda for policymakers and the biotechnology industry. Terminator is a threat to food sovereignty and agrobiodiversity: ending the moratorium on Terminator will increase control of seed by transnational corporations (TNCs) and restrictions on farmers’ rights to save and plant harvested seed. Additionally, pollen from genetically-modified (GM) crops with Terminator will contaminate non-GM and organic crops, and native plant species.

Five Questions Monsanto Needs to Answer about its Seed Donation to Haiti
17/05/2010
Monsanto has donated $4 million in seeds to Haiti, sending 60 tons of conventional hybrid corn and vegetable seed, followed by 70 more tons of corn seed last week with an additional 345 tons of corn seed to come during the next year. Yet the number one recommendation of a recent report by Catholic Relief Services on post-earthquake Haiti is to focus on local seed fairs and not to introduce new or “improved” varieties at this time.

Planting false hopes with patented seeds
16/05/2010
Is it surprising corporations that sell genetically modified (GM) seeds are telling us they can save Africa with their patented seeds ("Biotech in Africa: High Hopes and High Stakes," May 9)? In the United States, one corporation, Monsanto, owns the genes of more than 90 percent of soybean and 80 percent of corn seeds. That monopoly power in the seed market is causing sources of non-GM seeds to dry up. Already, some Iowa farmers are having difficulty finding non-GM seeds.

Food sovereignty is a concept that values food producers rather than squeezing them off the land. The advice is to choose local fruits and vegetables in season. Improving self-sufficiency in vegetables could help counter climate change. Globally, the meat and dairy industry produces more emissions than global transport. Cutting back on eating meat and dairy products is a simple and direct way to reduce the world's carbon footprint.

Last year, Monsanto sued to stop Pioneer from "stacking" Roundup Ready with another trait. Denvir says Pioneer complained to the Justice Department.
